THE RADIOLOGY CLINIC...GOES DIGITAL....

The Radiology Clinic has almost finished the installation of a NEW digital radiography system from Philips. The new CR system will help provide more flexibility and increase accuracy in diagnosis though the use of speciall phophor plate cassette that are read by a digital reader and the data sent to a computer screen where it can be manipulated to suite the clnicial condition and the requirements of the Consultant Radiologist.

These images are then stored on a newly installed PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) work station where they can be brought up on subsequent visits for comparison. The PACS system will also allow for transfer of images over the internet thus allowing referring clinicians the facility of immediate review of the radiographs and, for off site reporting by the Consultant Radiologist. PACS also allow for safe storage of the images which are tagged to the respective reports.

The patient is offered either their images on a small compact and discreet CD disc which can be opened on any computer for review as it is supported with its own DICOM reader automatically. Alternatively hard copy images are available via our new SONY laser printer that supports different image formats and does away with the hassle of dark room processing with the removal of its chemical induced fumes and potential image deterioration over time. Laser images are resistant to most environmental factors and maintian diagnostic condition for a very long period.

The utilization of the new CR system will produce a 30-40% reduction in RADIATION DOSE with its obvious benefits to the patient. The flexibility of the system allow sthe radiographer to select lower dose values to produce similar and enhanced radiographs.
