Breast Cyst Aspiration

Cyst aspiration

Examination Description

Breast cysts are fluid-filled areas within the breast and are usually benign. In many cases, they do not require treatment and can be safely monitored. However, some cysts may increase in size or become tender and painful, causing discomfort when wearing a bra, sleeping, or applying pressure to the breast. Breast cyst aspiration is a simple, minimally invasive procedure used to drain fluid from a cyst and relieve discomfort. The procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance, allowing the breast specialised radiologist to see the cyst clearly and guide a fine needle accurately into the correct area. At our radiology clinic, breast cyst aspiration is carried out in a comfortable and private setting. The area is cleaned and local anaesthetic is used to numb the skin before the needle is gently inserted into the cyst. The fluid is then withdrawn, which often reduces the size of the cyst and helps relieve pain or pressure. Preparation You may usually eat and drink as normal before the procedure unless advised otherwise. Please inform the clinic if you are taking blood-thinning medication, such as warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, rivaroxaban, apixaban, or similar medication. You should also let us know if you have any allergies, particularly to local anaesthetic, dressings, or antiseptic solutions. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, ideally a two-piece outfit, as you will need to undress from the waist up. Please avoid applying talcum powder, deodorant, creams, or lotions to the breast or underarm area on the day of your appointment. What happens during the procedure You will be asked to lie on an examination couch while the breast is prepared. Ultrasound is used to locate the cyst and guide the needle safely. Once the area is numb, a fine needle is inserted into the cyst and the fluid is gently drained. The procedure is usually quick and well tolerated. A small dressing may be placed over the needle site afterwards. After the procedure You can usually return home shortly after the aspiration. Some mild tenderness, bruising, or swelling may occur but should settle quickly. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or swimming for 3 days after the procedure. You will be given any necessary aftercare instructions before leaving the clinic.
