DEXA Bone Density Scan
Examination Description
A bone density scan is a safe, non-invasive examination used to measure the strength and density of your bones. It is commonly used to assess bone loss and help diagnose or monitor conditions such as osteopenia and osteoporosis. This examination may be recommended for people at increased risk of low bone density, including post-menopausal women, older adults, patients with a history of fractures, long-term steroid use, certain medical conditions, or a family history of osteoporosis. It may also be used to monitor bone health over time or assess response to treatment. During the scan, you will be asked to lie comfortably on an examination table while the scanner passes over the areas being assessed, most commonly the lower spine and hips. The examination is quick, painless, and does not require injections. Preparation No special preparation is usually required for a bone density scan. You may eat and drink as normal before your appointment unless advised otherwise. Please avoid taking calcium supplements on the day of your scan, unless you have been instructed differently. You should also inform the clinic if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing without metal fastenings, zips, or buttons around the waist or hip area. You may be asked to remove jewellery, belts, or other metal items before the examination.
