Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy
Biopsy of suspicious lesions seen on digital mammography or ultrasond breast
Examination Description
An ultrasound-guided breast biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure used to take a small sample of tissue from an area of the breast that requires further assessment. It is commonly used for small or suspicious breast lesions that cannot be felt by hand but can be clearly seen on ultrasound. Ultrasound guidance allows the radiologist to place the needle accurately and obtain a useful tissue sample for diagnosis. At our radiology clinic, ultrasound-guided breast biopsies are performed by breast specialised radiologists in a comfortable and private setting. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, which numbs the area being examined. Most patients find the procedure very manageable, with little or no pain. Preparation Before your appointment, please inform the clinic if you are taking blood-thinning medication, such as warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, rivaroxaban, apixaban, or any similar medication. You should also let us know if you have any allergies, particularly to local anaesthetic, dressings, or antiseptic solutions. You may usually eat and drink as normal before the procedure unless advised otherwise. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, ideally a two-piece outfit, as you will need to undress from the waist up. Please avoid applying talcum powder, deodorant, creams, or lotions to the breast or underarm area on the day of your appointment. What happens during the procedure You will be asked to lie on an examination couch while the area is cleaned and prepared. The radiologist will use ultrasound to locate the area to be sampled. Local anaesthetic is then injected to numb the skin and deeper breast tissue. A small needle is carefully guided into the area using ultrasound imaging, and several small tissue samples may be taken. The procedure is usually completed within a short time. A dressing will be placed over the biopsy site, and gentle pressure may be applied to reduce the chance of bruising. After the procedure You can usually return home shortly after the biopsy. Some mild bruising, tenderness, or swelling can occur and should settle gradually. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or swimming for 3 days after the procedure. You will be given aftercare instructions before leaving the clinic. The tissue sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis, and results are usually available in 3 working days.
